چکیده

Cationic latex microgel particles were studied in dilute aqueous suspensions of varying ionic strengths. Static light scattering indicates a Gaussian distribution of polymer density over the length scales probed. The measured radius of gyration is up to 50% larger than that obtained from TEM measurements of dried precursor particles. This radius of gyration is observed to be weak function of ionic strength. In contrast, dynamic light scattering measurements of the hydrodynamic radius showed a strong dependence on ionic strength, giving a ratio of the gyration to hydrodynamic radii from 0.53 at low ionic strength to 0.76 at high ionic strength. We interpret these data as an increased friction on the microgel particles due to electroviscous effects. While we draw a comparison of our measurements to existing theoretical results, there is at present no model to describe adequately these electroviscous effects for microgel particles.

Non-aqueous microgel particles: synthesis, properties and applications.

Microgels are cross-linked polymer latex particles that can form stable colloidal dispersions. Their typical sizes range from 10 to 1000 nm and they can swell in response to their external environment (pH, temperature and solvency). This swelling behaviour is central to many potential applications for microgels. The existing literature is dominated by studies of the properties of aqueous microg...

Field-induced structures in miscible ferrofluid suspensions with and without latex spheres.

We explore magnetic-field-induced ordering and microphase separation of aqueous ferrofluid and of aqueous mixtures of ferrofluid with nonmagnetic latex spheres. The ferrofluid is a surfactant stabilized aqueous suspension of magnetite (Fe3O4) particles with average diameter 20 nm (including the approximately 2.5-nm thick surfactant layer); the nonmagnetic latex spheres are charge stabilized pol...

Protective effect of aqueous suspension of dried latex of Calotropis procera against oxidative stress and renal damage in diabetic rats.

Calotropis species have been used in the traditional medicinal system for the treatment of diseases of the liver and abdomen. In view of the antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic properties of an aqueous suspension obtained from the dried latex of Calotropis procera, the present study was carried out to evaluate its efficacy in affording protection against alloxan induced changes in rat kidney. A ...

pH-induced deswelling kinetics of sterically stabilized poly(2-vinylpyridine) microgels probed by stopped-flow light scattering.

Near-monodisperse, sterically stabilized poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) microgels were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. These particles exhibited completely reversible pH-responsive swelling/deswelling behavior in aqueous solution. Stopped-flow light scattering was employed to investigate the kinetics of pH-induced deswelling in highly dilute dispersions. Upon a pH jump from 2 to various f...

Polystyrene latex particles coated with crosslinked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

Thermoresponsive colloidal particles were prepared by seeded precipitation polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in the presence of a crosslinking monomer, N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), using polystyrene latex particles (ca. 50 nm in diameter) as seeds in aqueous dispersion. Phase transitions of the prepared poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM, shells on polystyrene cores were stu...
